Cancer Genetics Clinic

The Cancer Genetics Clinic at University of Miami is committed to identify, educate and manage families with hereditary cancer syndromes. We are the only program in South Florida offering comprehensive genetic evaluation and counseling by a board certified team of genetic counselors and geneticists.

What is Hereditary Cancer?

Most cancers happen by chance. About 5-10% of most cancers (particularly breast cancer, ovarian cancer and colon cancers) result from an inherited change, or mutation in a gene. Someone who inherits a mutation in a cancer predisposition gene may have a very high risk of developing certain types of cancer at early ages. Patients can learn if their family history contributes to their risk of cancer or if their own history of cancer may have been caused by an inherited gene mutation. Those at increased risk can learn how cancer can be detected at early, curable stages and what methods are available for reducing their risks. An example of cancer predisposition genes that some people may be familiar are the BRCA1 and BRCA 2 gene, which greatly increases a woman’s risk for breast and ovarian cancer.
