Researchers Receive the Louis J. Elsas Research Award in Biochemical Genetics

Three University of Miami Miller School of Medicine doctoral students and one postdoctoral researcher have been selected for a prestigious award that honors the legacy of a renowned geneticist, the late Louis J. “Skip” Elsas, M.D. The four were named as the 2017 recipients of the Louis J. Elsas Research Award in Biochemical Genetics, established by the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation in 2011.

Miller School and Collaborators to Receive up to $30.2 Million for Alzheimer’s Research

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and collaborators have been selected to receive awards totaling up to $30.2 million in grant funding for Alzheimer’s disease research. The awards include a grant expected to total $22.7 million over five years and a second grant for $7.5 million. Both awards were given by the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health.

Sylvester Genetics Researcher Receives Prestigious Pioneer Award from NIH

A Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center genetics researcher was honored today with the prestigious “Pioneer Award” and a five-year $5+ million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The grant will support Ramin Shiekhattar, Ph.D., professor of human genetics at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, in pursuing a novel line of research on “Enhancer RNA Therapy.”

New Ethics Guidelines for Gene Editing

On August 3, The American Journal of Human Genetics published the American Society for Human Genetics’ policy statement on germline gene editing in humans. Representing the Miller School on the task force was Rosario Isasi, J.D., M.P.H., a bioethicist and lawyer whose work focuses on the regulation of human genetic technologies. We asked Isasi to discuss the policy statement and its broad implications.
