Four-Year Pathway in Human Genetics and Genomics
The Four Year Pathway in Human Genetics and Genomics was introduced at the Miller School of Medicine in 2005 and is the first of its kind in the United States. It was designed with the purpose of attracting a new generation of medical students from the University of Miami who have an intellectual curiosity about genetics and the role it plays in the medical specialty they choose to follow. The Pathway is administered by the Department of Human Genetics and has a steering committee which helps students in finding mentors, assisting students with their issues or questions as they progress through the pathway and coordinating a monthly student-friendly genetics/genomics seminar series.
PATHWAY IN HUMAN GENETICS & GENOMICS
ENROLLING NOW!
Recent advances in genetics are now being integrated into contemporay medical practice. To ensure that you, our medical school graduates, have the attitudes, skills, and knowledge to incorporate this information into your every day practice, the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine has developed a Pathway in Human Genetics and Genomics, the first of its kind in the country. This Pathway is designed for students who wish to specialize in Medical Genetics and/or Genomic Medicine as a career, or for those who wish to graduate with a deep understanding of the subject.
ENROLLMENT APPLICATION IS SIMPLE
Simply fill in the Application Form by December 4, 2009. The Pathway Committee, which is made up of geneticists who are involved in clinics, research, or both, will then meet to select students for the PATHWAY based on information received on the application form. We will organize a mixer party for the selected students to meet other geneticists and previous Pathway participants.
WHAT IS REQUIRED OF YOU ONCE SELECTED?
-
Choose a mentor by February 28, 2010, and plan a research project. You will begin work on this project in the summer between the first and second years of medical school.
-
Attend three seminars a semester on topics relevant to genetics and/or genomics.
-
Attend a 1-month genetics elective during the 3rd year and 2 such electives or rotations in the 4th year. These electives or rotations may be clinical or research.
-
Attend the monthly Pathway meetings
In the four years of the Pathway, you are expected to accumulate a portfolio which contains at least one abstract of a clinical or research project that you have assisted with, and a log book of genetics or genomics seminars and/or workshops that you have attended. This you will submit as a report of your scholarly activities in genetics and genomics during the Pathway.
At the time of graduation, and dependent on the successful completion of the activities described above, you will be awarded an Honors Certificate of added qualifications in Medical Genetics & Genomics.
THE MENTORS
An essential component of the PATHWAY will be a close relationship with one or more mentors. These are faculty working in genetics and/or genomics from the entire Miller School of Medicine, including the Hussman Institute for Human Genomics. We will do all that we can to ensure that you meet as many geneticists as possible early on so that you can choose your mentor(s).
