Fellowship Programs

The Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Department of Human Genetics offers accredited training fellowship programs for clinical biochemical genetics, clinical cytogenetics, and clinical molecular genetics.  These programs are under the leadership of Dr. Parul Jayakar, a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Genetics, and are available for people who hold a medical degree or post-doctoral degree who wish to pursue accreditation as lab directors for clinical Cytogenetics, clinical Biochemical Genetics and Clinical Molecular Genetics laboratories.

The two-year training program encompasses 6 months in research, followed by 12 months training in the chosen specialty of clinical Cytogenetics, clinical Biochemical Genetics or clinical Molecular Genetics.  The fellowship also mandates that the candidate spend two months rotating in each of these labs under the supervision of an assigned mentor who is a Board certified lab director or a clinical geneticist. Guidelines for each rotation are well established and followed. The trainee or resident is evaluated by the mentor periodically during the rotation. During the program the trainee has allocated time for a six month research project under the guidance of a mentor, didactic lectures, presenting seminars, reviewing cases, attending clincal rounds, reading time, and critiquing journal club articles.  For information on eligibility, please visit www.abmg.org.  Inquiries about our program should be addressed to Dr. Parul Jayakar at djayakar@med.miami.edu.
